Urbana school board approves $10 million tax-levy increase

The district's current tax rate is $5.9249 per $100 of assessed valuation, meaning the owner of a $100,000 home paid $1,975; the new levy raised the rate to $5.9487 per $100, resulting in $1,983 in taxes on a $100,000 home, or $8 more.

Champaign man gets 4.5 years for throwing coffee on clerk

Alexander M. Owens, 54, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery for the attack at the Circle K on West Springfield Avenue. In return, the state dismissed a charge of attempted armed robbery alleging he tried to rob the clerk at knifepoint.
