Rossow: Progress imperative for Illinois

EVANSTON As football outsiders, we''re often confused when a coach hints of progress after a lopsided loss.

Maybe he''s seeing something on film that we missed in person.

Stadium overhaul impresses Turner

EVANSTON – The last time Ron Turner walked into Northwestern's stadium before Friday, it wasn't pretty.

Turner coached at Dyche Stadium in the early 1980s. He walked into Ryan Field on Friday afternoon to show his team around.

Letting Penn State off hook irks Illini

CHAMPAIGN – Don't talk moral victories to the Illinois volleyball team.

The 20th-ranked Illini wanted nothing to do with that slant on their shockingly close five-game setback to the No. 1 team in the nation Friday night.

Motivation built in for matchup

EVANSTON – Neither team appears bowl bound.

They lost last Saturday by a combined 54 points.

They face difficult games next Saturday.

It takes awhile to turn it around

The calls started coming for Tommy Bowden late in 1996. For some reason, he didn't hang up.

It was Tulane on the phone. The small, private school in New Orleans needed a new coach. Again.

The Green Wave administrators decided to make Bowden the latest victim, er, candidate.

Orange squad rips Blue in baseball

Illinois third baseman Craig Marquie and catcher Jeff Gertz each went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs to power the Orange team to a 17-3 victory over the Blue squad Thursday in Game 1 of the Orange and Blue World Series in Champaign.

Big weekend has UI''s Hardin worried

CHAMPAIGN – The No. 1 women's volleyball team in the nation is coming to Huff Hall Friday night, and Don Hardin's in a world of worry.

But it's not Penn State that has the third-year Illinois coach pacing the floor at night or reaching for the antacid tablets.
