Ties to Lions don''t bind

CHAMPAIGN – She was recruited by Penn State, her father is a Penn State alumnus and her buddies back home adore the Nittany Lions.

So should the Illinois women's basketball team defeat No. 17 Penn State tonight at the Assembly Hall, Susan Blauser will have extra incentive to whoop it up. But she doesn't seem obsessed with the idea.

Vershaw earns bragging rights

MADISON, Wis. – The next time he goes home to East Peoria, Mark Vershaw will be able to brag a little bit. OK, a lot.

The Wisconsin sophomore finally got the best of Illinois and Peoria's Sergio McClain. Vershaw scored 14 points, yanked down six rebounds and had three assists in a 75-53 win Wednesday against the Illini.

Wisconsin badgers UI''s Mast

MADISON, Wis. Ty Calderwood wasn''t sure what to make of the new Illinois point guard. So he decided to run a little test.

The Wisconsin senior forced Illini walk-on Nate Mast to dribble to the left. That''s all Calderwood needed to see.

Down in the dumps

MADISON, Wis. – Time and time again, Lon Kruger has warned fans to brace themselves for a season of small steps.

On Wednesday night, his last-place Illini finally took a few Sasquatch-sized ones.

Wisconsin goes with percentages

There is often more to shooting percentages than meets the eye.

In Illinois' 75-53 loss Wednesday night at Wisconsin, Illinois managed seven field goals on 29 percent shooting in the first half. The Badgers shot 46 percent during that span.

UI losing streak more than games

MADISON, Wis. – Most teams come out bruised and battered after a game with Wisconsin's rough-and-tumble Badgers.

Lon Kruger's Illini were feeling beat up before they even left for Cheese Country.

Recruiting still name of the game

A long night's journey into the Internet probably brings a reporter closest to what fans really want to know ... 94 interrogations emphasizing that it is recruiting, Recruiting, RECRUITING.

Put many ways, it is mainly:

(1) How will Lon Kruger use his two scholarships now that Rich Beyers has moved to Illinois State, and (2) how good is Ron Turner's recruiting class?
