Tate: Times are a-changing on track

Two decades ago, the intensity of track and field interest locally was such that Illinois was designated as host of two NCAA championships.

Today, we look to Saturday's nonscored competition – a lineup of "exhibition" events for men and women – as the only outdoor meet on UI premises this spring. Men's coach Gary Wieneke says 12 schools will participate, seven full and five partials.

CHAMPAIGN – Craig Tiley isn't the only one who thinks Illinois has a shot at a national tennis title.


Lavery controls Broncos

CHAMPAIGN – Pitcher Tim Lavery posted his second consecutive strong outing as the Illinois baseball team defeated Western Michigan 13-6 Wednesday at Illinois Field to sweep a two-game series.

Lavery, who allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings, improved to 5-5.


UI gets to keep playing

CHAMPAIGN – The news just kept getting better for the Illinois women's tennis team Wednesday.

First, the Illini found out sophomore Simone Kung and senior Stacy Schapiro were named to the All-Big Ten team, the doubles partners breaking a three-year UI drought.


Illini safety staying patient

CHAMPAIGN – On Monday, Bobby Jackson will wake up in a hospital room, take a look at his left knee and wait for an answer.

Did he have reconstructive surgery on his left knee? Or did the doctors perform minor repairs?


Big doings in the Big Ten

Sounds like it could be awhile before Andre Brown, Darius Miles and Reo Logan are done school shopping.

Rudden, O'Neill key Illini victory

CHAMPAIGN – Kevin Rudden went 4 for 5 and Champaign Central product Dan O'Neill 3 for 5 in Illinois' 11-6 nonconference baseball victory against Western Michigan on Tuesday at Illinois Field.

The Illini (28-20) broke a 6-6 tie with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
