Tate:Self gets Head start on Chicago

It didn't take Bill Self long to put Illinois back in the forefront of Chicago's highly-political Public League.

On the lookout for athleticism and versatility – speedsters who can aggressively compete on both ends of the court – the first-year Illini basketball coach needed only a few peeks at Manley's 6-foot-3 Luther Head to become interested.

Leader selects Illinois

TROTWOOD, Ohio – Those who know Tiffanie Guthrie like to tell a story about her. It illustrates, they say, Guthrie's priorities when it comes to basketball.

Guthrie, a 5-foot-11 forward from the northwestern Dayton suburb of Trotwood, on Monday made a verbal commitment to play for Theresa Grentz's Illini in 2001. Her commitment to her AAU team stands out.

Eight enough for UI

If confidence is a key to a solid Big Ten season, the Illini women's soccer team gleaned plenty in an 8-0 home victory against Northern Illinois on Sunday.

Emily Brown started the carnage at 10:25 with an assist from Lisa Baldwin. She added another 15 minutes later.

Tate: Indiana bully just couldn''t change ways

Indiana University officials were in denial for nearly three decades.

So it would have been inappropriate to oust the Classic Bully in May for outrageous activities these very administrators had overlooked in the past.

Illini work on Kittner campaign

Kurt Kittner''s touchdown to interception ratio in 1999 put him on the Heisman Trophy radar chart.

Keep up his current pace, his teammates said, and he just might be making a trip in December to New York.

Rossow: As expected, Illinois delivers

SAN DIEGO – The most promising part of Illinois football has not been Kurt Kittner’s accuracy, Antoineo Harris’ threshold for pain, Greg Lewis’ ability to get open or Ron Turner’s knack to motivate.

It has not been the work of the offensive line, as big and ornery as there is in the country, or the hard hits doled out by the linebackers or even the sticky hands of the tight ends.

Rossow: Big Ten teams stay on their toes

Lon Kruger left for the NBA, Brian Cook left with Team USA and Cory Bradford left for Hawaii to collect, in order, a huge paycheck, international experience and NBA autographs.

Ron Guenther went golfing overseas and came back with a birdie in Bill Self, who two-stepped in from Tulsa to give the program a welcome energy boost. The big guys still are aching, the little guys still are shooting and recruits from Chicago finally are listening.

UI fan caravan rolls to game

SAN DIEGO They didnt converge in numbers like Nebraska had at Notre Dame, but Illinois fans made a respectable showing at Saturdays game. About 2,000 came to watch the Illinis first stop in San Diego since 1992.

Illini fans are coming out of the woodwork. Youre going to see a lot more come out if we keep winning, Steve Katsinas said. It can happen as long as the university makes a sustained commitment.

Illinois spikers tired, tested

And you thought West Coast football games lasted forever.

How about a 4 1/2-hour volleyball marathon Saturday in Chicago?

Illinois coach Don Hardin's team outlasted Louisville 15-9, 12-15, 15-11, 16-14 in an early match that took 2 hours and 21 minutes, then returned to the court for a five-game match against host Loyola that went 2:15. The Ramblers won that match 15-7, 8-15, 15-11, 8-15, 15-12.
