Illinois, Self frozen out of Alaska tournament

Illinois'' November just got warmer, but the change is leaving Bill Self cold.

The Illini are out of the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, victims of a judge''s ruling on an injunction regarding exempted tournaments for NCAA basketball teams.

Tate: Predictions don´t make much sense

L et''s see now. Your favorite football team ... humiliated Purdue 38-13 in November at West Lafayette, Ind., and prevailed for the sixth time in eight trips to Ohio State, 34-22.

finished the Big Ten with aseven-game winning streak and was the Big Ten''s highest-ranked team after the bowl games.

Ex-Illini Butkus, Fitts, relish opportunity at Bears'' camp

BOURBONNAIS Luke Butkus and Steve Fitts sign autographs for eager fans just like the rest of their Chicago Bears teammates.

They eat meals in the same dining hall and play cards with the same veterans that have built a solid Chicago team.

UI freshmen lead way

Incoming Illini Dee Brown and Deron Williams combined for 28 points to lead the United States to a 71-65 victory Sunday against Argentina in the bronze medal game at the COPABA Men''s Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament in La Asuncion, Venezuela.

The Americans, along with Argentina, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, earned berths in the 2003 FIBA Junior World Championship.

Recruiting´s a tall order for tall Texan

Kalee Carey''s summer is just what you''d expect for a player ranked No. 22 in the nation by one scouting service.

   Hectic.

I always play this much during the summer, said the 6-foot-4 center from Canyon, Texas, but going through the recruiting process, it''s been a little crazy.

Big as Texas: Footbal still king, but state is bubbling with hoops talent

You might think of Dubya or the Cowboys. Or maybe of oil fields and J.R. Ewing.

If you''re unenlightened enough, you might even picture pickup trucks and shotgun racks.

Big Ten: It''s only fitting that honesty has become an issue

It was scheduled to be a usual Sunday team meeting during an unusual week of preparing for Illinois'' trip to the Sugar Bowl. But Illini football coach Ron Turner added a twist in December.

In front of the players and staff, he walked into the squad room wearing his Pacific letterman''s jacket. It was a tight fit that drew a lot of laughs, but it was also a funny response to a serious situation.

Self plans to make European tour - if he´s healthy

He''s still not 100 percent healthy. But if Bill Self has his way, his recent surgery isn''t going to limit the rest of his summer.

Back on the recruiting road after sitting out the first evaluation period of July, Self still intends to coach the Big Ten''s European Touring Team in August.
