AMBER Alert strengthened with new law

SPRINGFIELD – A new state law signed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich is designed to strengthen the AMBER Alert system that was used to find a missing 14-year-old Urbana girl this May.

Tyeeste Jones, who disappeared while taking out the trash, was safely located in Chicago just few days after the Urbana Police Department issued a statewide AMBER Alert for her.

Quakes shake the Web

Forget the notion of researchers toiling away alone in the lab, or maybe with a couple of graduate students, on the way to producing journal articles recapping their findings.

In the future, they may conduct experiments with colleagues a thousand miles away, even across the world; share findings in real time while simultaneously communicating with each other; and leave behind a searchable library of raw data for others to tap – all pretty much from the familiar setting of a Web browser.

Tate: Guards give Illini reason for optimism

Coach Bruce Weber will welcome back 20 points to the basketball team Friday. Or is it 30?

Dee Brown and Deron Williams, to be exact, tallied 12.0 and 6.3 as Illini freshmen under Bill Self. Based on summer developments, they''ll join UI practices for the August trip to Europe as strikingly more efficient scorers ... even if that isn''t exactly what Weber has in mind.

UI set for reporting on foreign students

URBANA – The University of Illinois will be able to meet government reporting requirements for international students by the Friday deadline.

UI officials have been working this year to establish electronic records for more than 4,500 foreign students. The records report information now required by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an organization within the Department of Homeland Security with responsibilities including those of the former Immigration and Naturalization Service.

West Nile virus returns to Champaign County

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed Wednesday that a dead blue jay found July 25 in Champaign has tested positive for West Nile virus, a disease that infected 900 Illinoisans last year, resulting in 66 deaths.

Most people infected with the virus show no symptoms, but some may develop a mild fever or headache three to 15 days after being bitten by a mosquito carrying the West Nile virus.

Son named in murders of parents

DANVILLE – Danville police on Wednesday morning named Gary Myers as a suspect in the beating deaths of his parents. He is the only suspect at this time, they said.

"Through the investigations conducted by Danville detectives, and in cooperation with the Illinois State Police and Champaign County authorities, the focus was narrowed within the last 24 hours," Danville police detective Larry Thomason said.

Illini gymnasts honored for academics

Six Illinois women''s gymnasts were named 2003 Scholastic All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches.

Link in tragedies sought

DANVILLE ? Authorities are still seeking clues in two tragic incidents ? one in Champaign County and one 30 miles away in Vermilion County ? and trying to determine whether they are linked.

"Naturally we're taking a look at that because of the fact there's family members involved," Danville police Lt. Doug Miller said of a possible connection between the suicide along Interstate 74 of 43-year-old Gary Myers of Danville on Monday and the deaths in Danville of his parents in an apparent double homicide that may have occurred on Saturday.
