Aquifer is gift that keeps giving

Our water supply looks strong for the future.

Those who complain that bad news drowns out the good got a break recently when it was reported that concerns about Champaign-Urbana's future water supply are unfounded.

Champaign-Urbana is sitting pretty right in the midst of the Mahomet Aquifer, and that source of water is even better than previously thought.

Champaign to consider letting neighborhood taverns open on Sundays

CHAMPAIGN — City council members this week will consider a proposal to allow neighborhood taverns to open their doors on Sundays.

The new rule would apply only to two bars — Neighbors at the Ice House, 703 N. Prospect Ave., and Huber's, 1312 W. Church St. The two opened decades ago and survive today in residential neighborhoods.

Champaign school board to vote on working cash bond issue, discuss merits of one large high school tonight

Tonight, the Champaign school board will meet for its regularly scheduled special meeting.

The board will convene tonight at 5:30 for an executive session, with the open session of the meeting beginning at 6 p.m.

Celebrities donate doodles for fundraiser

CHAMPAIGN — What do cartoonist Lynn Johnston, columnist Dave Barry, actor James Earl Jones and race car driver Mario Andretti have in common?

They contributed doodles to Doodle for Wildlife, the annual fundraiser for the Wildlife Medical Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

Baseball beats Lamar late

BEAUMONT, Texas — Jordan Parr doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to give the Illinois baseball team a 9-8 victory against Lamar on Sunday to close out the YMBL Cardinal Classic.

Catcher Alex Lincoln, who entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the ninth, picked a runner off third to seal the win and help the Illini finish 1-1 on the weekend.

Klee: Illini still fighting

CHAMPAIGN — There was roughly 12 minutes left in regulation when Bruce Weber came onto the court.

Too far onto the court, Mike Eades determined. So the referee calmly put his right hand on Weber's shoulder and said, "Back in the box, back in the box."
