CHAMPAIGN — Illinois scored 10 runs in the first three innings and stayed in command thereafter to defeat Mississippi Valley State 12-4 on Saturday in a nonconference baseball game at Illinois Field. The top of the batting order did most of the damage for the Illini, with the first five hitters combining to go 11 for 20 with nine RBI and eight runs.

Urbana 5, Rantoul 0. Conner Gremer pitched a no-hitter and struck out six to lead the Tigers to a road win. Tanner Russell had four hits, including a double and triple, and scored three runs for Urbana.
CHAMPAIGN — Well, that didn't take long.
"It's a no-brainer for me to become the coach at K-State," Bruce Weber said Saturday at a news conference in Manhattan, Kan. "I couldn't be prouder."
Twenty-two days after being fired at Illinois, Weber was hired to replace Frank Martin at Kansas State. He agreed to a five-year contract worth $1.5 million annually.

CHAMPAIGN — A Chicago man was injured in an intersection collision on campus late Saturday morning.
Champaign police Sgt. Bruce Ramseyer said the accident happened at First and Green streets at 10:50 a.m. and was the result of one driver running a red light.
DEWEY — A Melvin teen-ager was not seriously injured after his car crashed and caught fire Saturday afternoon in northern Champaign County.
Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Vercler said Nathan Hennessey, 17, was able to get out of his Dodge Neon when it came to rest in a field on County Road 1000 E, near 3100 N.
PHILO — A Villa Grove woman was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence after a car crash late Friday night in southern Champaign County.
Illinois State Police at Pesotum said the crash happened on Illinois 130 three miles south of Philo at 10:30 p.m.
URBANA — An Urbana man with a history of criminal convictions was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison for his latest crime.
JAMAICA — Vermilion County health officials are trying to determine how various animals were poisoned on the north side of Jamaica over the last month.
