I plan to drop by the HOOPLAH Fantastico: An All-Purpose Party from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the I.D.E.A. Store, second floor, 28 E. Springfield Ave., C. Party-goers at the thrift shop for artists and makers will bid farewell to general manager Gail Glende Rost and welcome Clori D'Agnolo as new general manager and Molly Delaney as new executive director of the C-U Schools Foundation, which the store benefits. If you haven't been to the I.D.E.A. Store yet check it out. It's a lot of fun.

I always thought the "Ice Cream and Independence" show at the Virginia Theatre sounded corny. But this year's sounds good. It opens at 5 p.m. Thursday with an "ice-cream social" — actually TCBY frozen-yogurt. The show moves inside, where house organist David Schroeder will perform on the Mighty Wurlitzer starting around 6:15. The 7 p.m. show features the C-U Civic Wind Band, and the Canadian Brass, with UI Professor Bernhard Scully on French horn. Tickets: $8 to $40. 356-9063

Besides the Freedom Celebration on Friday, there's an artsier 4th of July event on Saturday: From 6 to 10 p.m. the Vault Arts Collective, 100 N. Main, Tuscola, will host "Red, White & BLUES," its free monthly party. Guest artist: Jan Kappes with her exhibit "Beware of the Old Woman 2014" (jan-kappes.fineartamerica.com/) and guest musician Reverend Robert, master of prewar blues who won 1st in the '04 National Slide Guitar Festival in North Carolina.
