CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign Urbana Theatre Company will host its annual Ginny Awards Gala on Jan. 30 in the Chancellor Ballroom of the I Hotel and Conference Center, 1900 S. First St. The event is open to the public.
The Ginny Awards, the CUTC's equivalent of the Academy Awards, are named after Champaign's historic Virginia Theatre, where CUTC productions have been staged since 1992. Ginny awards are given to CUTC performers who are voted "best" in a variety of categories: male and female actors; supporting male and female actors; up-and-coming actor; musical moment; dance moment; dramatic moment; and comedic moment.
The voting will take place at the event. A sample ballot is posted at www.cutc.org.
The company's 2009 season included the musicals "Sweet Charity," "Les Misérables – Student Edition," "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Jekyll & Hyde."
The evening will begin at 6:30 and will include a buffet dinner, a musical revue of the 2009 season, a musical preview of the 2010 season and the awards ceremony. CUTC also will recognize community members who have volunteered their time and talents above and beyond the norm. The evening will end with dancing to music provided by Bugbees DJ Plus.
Tickets are $25 a person and will not be sold at the door. Reservations must be made by Jan. 25 by calling 344-3884 or by sending a check to CUTC, P.O. Box 6104, Champaign, IL 61826.
