Hot rods coming to Champaign

About 3,000 specialty cars are expected roll through Champaign Monday, June 4, as a part of a nationwide tour.

The 18th annual, seven day, seven-city Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour will make a stop in Champaign on the third day of the event.

Hot Rod Magazine and local officials announced the details of the event last month at the new Applied Technology Center at Parkland College.

Jenny Schmitz, director of events for the magazine, said the tour brings the magazine to life.

The event draws a different group of people to the community, said Jayne DeLuce, president and chief executive officer of the Champaign County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

DeLuce said the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour is projected to have a $1.3 million economic impact on the community.

The event, which is free for spectators, will be in Champaign on June 4 at the Assembly Hall.

Parkland College is having a "Cruise In" after the Power Tour folks settle in and we have all had a chance to drool over their cars!  The "Cruise In" will be an opportunity to get a sneak peek at the nearly completed Applied Technologies Center at Parkland College.  There will be self-guided tours through the building, cool cars staged inside the building and AUTOCROSS racing in the "M" Wing parking lots!  Come by and check it all out: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
