CHAMPAIGN — The University YMCA will host, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, the opening reception for the new exhibition, "Art for Empowerment: Healing Through Art," in the first-floor Murphy Gallery.
The exhibition is of art created by women and girls, all survivors of abuse and violence, and shows the value of art making for healing, self-knowledge and empowerment. Presented by the Women's Center of Carbondale and curated by Elka Kazmiercza, the exhibition will be on view from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Dec. 14.
A related event will be the Healing Through Art workshop led by the Illini Art Therapy Association, with all materials provided, at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Murphy Gallery in the Y, 1001 S. Wright St., C. The workshop is free and open to the public.
Art @ the Y also will host the traditional Mexican folk trio Los Condendados Huastecos at 7 p.m. Friday to celebrate Immigrant Justice Month, designated by Allies of Faith, an interfaith coalition of congregations participating in the Champaign-Urbana Immigration Forum.
