Composers invited to enter competition

URBANA — Composers in East Central Illinois are invited to submit their pieces for a contest coordinated by the Urbana Pops Orchestra.

The winning entry in each of the two age categories will be performed at the orchestra's June concert.

The age categories are senior division (over 18) and junior division (18 and under). Composers must be residents or full-time students in East Central Illinois, which is defined geographically as Champaign, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt and Vermilion counties.

"There are a lot of talented composers in this community," said Urbana Pops Orchestra associate conductor Stephen Larson, who is coordinating the contest. "We wanted to provide a way to showcase some of that talent and give composers an opportunity to hear their pieces performed by an orchestra for an audience."

Entries are due on Jan. 1 and will be judged independently by professional composers. Complete details and a downloadable application form are available at http://www.urbanapops.org.
