Harpist will perform at planetarium

CHAMPAIGN — Harpist Ann McLaughlin will perform a concert titled "Celestial Strings: An Evening of Harp and Stargazing" at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College.

All seats are $4, with tickets available at the door. The event is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the planetarium and the Parkland College Theatre.

Under the planetarium dome, McLaughlin will perform musical selections while images of space and the star fields of winter skies are projected above her.

"It will be a unique combination of concert, light show and stargazing and will incorporate music of a variety of styles from Bach to Coldplay," reads a release from Parkland.

McLaughlin is a graduate student in music performance at the University of Illinois, where she studies with Ann Yeung. A winner of the 2011-12 University of North Texas Concerto Competition, McLaughlin has recorded as an ensemble member with the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra and Harp Ensemble.

The past two summers, she has been an official street musician in her hometown of Sioux Falls, S.D., as part of a downtown arts program.
