'Les Miserables' opens Friday in Sullivan

SULLIVAN — It seems people can't get enough of the musical "Les Miserables."

In addition to the sung-through movie, the Champaign Urbana Theatre Company plans a production for August, to be directed by Stephen Fiol, a former Millikin University arts administrator and professor.

And the Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan is mounting its own production, opening Friday and running through March 3.

New York director Kelly Shook returns to the Little Theatre to helm "Les Miserables," based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same title. The cast features 31 actors from New York, Chicago and central Illinois.

New to the Little Theatre is David Foley Jr., who will play the lead of Jean Valjean.

Cast members returning who were last seen in the Little Theatre's "Christmas Show — Home for the Holidays" are Sean Zimmerman as Javert, Karla Shook as Fantine, Ruthie Stephens as Eponine, Amelia Millar as Cosette and Tim Quartier as Marius.

Other cast members are Therese Kincade of Charleston as Madame Thenardier, Piper Countryman of Mattoon as young Cosette, Oliver Adamson of Moweaqua as Gavroche and Anna Zaccari of Effingham as Eponine.

Little Theatre musical director Joshua Zecher-Ross will lead the 14-piece orchestra.

"Les Miserables" originally opened on Broadway in 1986 and became one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history. It won eight Tony awards, including best musical and best original score.

It tells the story of Valjean, who after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread breaks parole to begin a new life. He is relentlessly tracked by police inspector Javert.

Along the way, Valjean and characters are swept up in a revolution in France, where a group of young idealists make their last stand at a street barricade.

Adult tickets for the show are $37.50; tickets for senior citizens and children are $35.40.

Tickets, including group tickets, may be purchased by calling the box office at 728-7375. Tickets also may be purchased via http://www.thelittletheatre.org.
