Group accepting proposed entries for 2013 film festival

CHAMPAIGN — The Illini Independent Film Festival is accepting submissions through March 30. While the festival focuses on local students' work, any filmmaker may submit an entry.

Students of MACS 464, an in-depth University of Illinois course on film festivals, are organizing the festival to showcase films created by college students in Illinois and community members in Champaign-Urbana.

"The students have looked at the history and importance of a variety of film festivals, from Cannes and Sundance to Midnight Sun and Pordenone, and the production of their own film festival allows them to apply that knowledge," course instructor Rich Potter said in a news release.

The students also serve as interns for the annual Roger Ebert's Film Festival, taking place this year April 17-21 at the the Virginia Theatre and at the UI.

Through their internships, students receive hands-on experience working on an established film festival.

Scheduled for April 27, the Illini Independent Film Festival will be a free, daylong event in the UI Armory Theater. Featured filmmakers will get to discuss their work with festival-goers and one another.

The films in competition will be awarded prizes based on ratings by a panel of judges drawn from the university community, as well as audience members.

The submissions may range from one to 120 minutes in length, with no restrictions on genre or subject. For more information, filmmakers may visit http://www.iifilmfestival.wix.com/illiniiff or contact Erik Scott at iiffsubmissions@gmail.com.
