Iron Post hosts EP release party for Bruiser and the Virtues

URBANA — Bruiser and the Virtues will perform at an EP release party from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at The Iron Post, 120 S. Race St.

The band members will be Bruce "Bruiser" Rummenie on guitar and vocals; Jeff Magby, drums; Ed Schaller, acoustic bass; Peter Roubal, tenor sax; and Neal Robinson, keyboards. The cover will be minimal, something like $3, Rummenie said.

"This may be one if not the last of Neal's gigs as his house is on the market and he is moving to California as soon as he sells it," Rummenie wrote in an email.

Robinson and Bruiser and the Virtues produced the four original songs by Rummenie on the EP. He had written the songs "a while back," and his band had been playing them for some time before Robinson asked if he could record and "produce" the songs.

"Basically, he took these old-school blues-styled songs and recorded them with his more modern, world-beat sensibilities," Rummenie said. "I played guitar and sang. Neal played keyboards and did all the programming. He took my songs and directed the recording and arrangement. It was a really fun and educative process.

"It was great to experience how the both of us, with very different artistic visions, came to agree on a synthesis — a totally new treatment of these songs."
