URBANA — The Heartland Gallery will host a Bloomsday celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, with readings from James Joyce's "Ulysses" performed by three well-known local actors: Gary Ambler, Joi Hoffsommer and Seamus Reilly.
Also, the Celtic gallery/gift shop at 112 W. Main St., U, will display Irish paintings of or relating to Joyce and other Irish writers, as well as photography of some of the locations featured in "Ulysses."
Bloomsday is traditionally celebrated throughout the world June 16 to commemorate the life and literary work of Joyce and in particular "Ulysses," his most controversial piece of literature.
The protagonist in the book is newspaper advertising salesman Leopold Bloom; the novel follows him on his journey through Dublin on June 16, 1904. June 16 also happens to be the day that Joyce had his first date with his future wife, Nora Barnacle.
Because June 16 is Father's Day this year, the gallery will celebrate Bloomsday a day early.
