Western swing show set for Iron Post
URBANA — Swing 'n' Country, which proclaims itself Southern Illinois' premier Western swing band, will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday at The Iron Post, 120 S. Race St.
The Marion-based band has been featured at the Southern Illinois Steel Guitar Show several times and has performed at many other events, among them the International Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis, The Louisville Steel Guitar Show and the Western Swing Society Festival in Missouri.
The band has worked with legendary country artists like Leona Williams and will soon back Texas legend Tony Booth ("Hee Haw," "RFD-TV," "The Buck Owens Show") at shows in July in Southern Illinois.
Swing 'n' Country band members are Dow Smith on lead guitar and vocals, Cord Fitch on pedal steel guitar, Bill Toler on bass and vocals, and Jeff Stoffel on drums. Appearing with them at the Post will be fiddler Dennis Stroughmatt of Albion.
"I get to play fiddle and sing with them when I'm not on the road with Creole Stomp or L'Esprit Creole, and it's always a blast as this group plays material straight out of the Bob Wills, Ray Price and Ernest Tubb songbooks," Stroughmatt said.
On the day of the show, Stroughmatt will return from an East Coast tour. The Swing 'n' Country band members are driving to Urbana just to do the show, he said.
"So we're sort of 'meeting in the middle' to make it happen," he said.
The cover charge is $5.
