Reception set for community art program

URBANA — A reception for "Reduce, Reuse, Renaissance Art" will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, 202 S. Broadway Ave., U.

The art, on display there since July 20, was created by students and instructors in the community art program, (Re)Making Matter(s), which was funded by an Urbana Public Arts Grant.

The program has focused on making sustainable and accessible art by using recycled, repurposed and salvaged supplies and materials. The art backgrounds of the participants ranged from none to extensive.

The program has focused on teaching a variety of techniques in material gathering and construction and sharing skills, ideas and materials. The resulting work was diverse and has given materials such as sticks, rubbish and everyday objects new artistic lives.

At the reception, which is free and open to the public, instructors will be available to help people attending the event make their own work. Materials will be provided, and refreshments will be served.
