Mhondoro plays on Saturday at Cowboy Monkey

CHAMPAIGN — Mhondoro Rhythm Success, a local band that plays Zimbabwe pop music, will perform at 10 p.m. Saturday at Cowboy Monkey, 6 Taylor St., C. It will be the group's last local show here until October.

The local band Big Grove Zydeco will open, starting at 9 p.m. Saturday. The cover charge is $5.

Singing with Mhondoro will be Tony Perman and Chipo Sakufiwa of Champaign, a native of Zambia.

Much of Mhondoro's repertoire is traditional mbira songs that musicians like Thomas Mapfumo interpreted for guitar bands.

Besides the music of Mapfumo, who internationally is the best-known of Zimbabwe's pop musicians, Mhondoro covers John Chibadura, the Bhundu Boys and Oliver Mtukudzi, among others.
