University YMCA showing works from Chinese student artists

CHAMPAIGN — The exhibition "Speak Out: Works from the Yunnan School of Painting" will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 5, in the Murphy Gallery at the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St., C.

Featuring a series of works by artists of the Yunnan School of Painting, the show explores the artistic revolutionaries of post-Mao China. Among the artists represented is Zhao Zhong Xiu, who was a student of master painter Liao Xin Xue, the first artist from Yunnan to study art in France.

Ian Wang, who curated the show, will give a talk at 5:30 p.m. Thusday, and the Jasmine Field Chinese Music Group will perform.

The exhibition will remain on view until Nov. 8. Co-sponsors include Dean's Graphics, the Spurlock Museum, and the Asian American Cultural Center.

Located in the Murphy Gallery of the University Y, Art @ the Y exhibitions are on view from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; the gallery is closed on weekends. For information, call 337-1500.
