Restaurant to donate to blues-in-school program

URBANA — The Prairie Crossroads Blues Society and Louie's Dixie Kitchen and BBQ are teaming up to raise money Monday for a Blues in the Schools program at Thomas Paine Elementary School in Urbana.

The restaurant will donate part of its proceeds Monday to the program, and Blues Society members will be at the restaurant, 1104 N. Cunningham Ave., U, to help serve lunch and dinner.

Blues in the Schools is a National Blues Foundation program. Locally, children in Grades 3-5 attend an after-school session for six weeks. The students are given instruction in blues harmonica by a local player and a Hohner harmonica.

Also, a University of Illinois African-American history Ph.D. candidate talks to the students, tying together history and music.

The Blues Society has previously completed Blues in the Schools programs at Wiley Elementary in Urbana and Garden Hills in Champaign, and conducted weekend workshops at the Urbana and Champaign libraries.

Louie's Dixie Kitchen will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. From 6 to 8 that night, Josh Spence of the Sugar Prophets and Jiggy & The Source will perform. Spence is a harmonica instructor in the program.
