Final installment of photo series will open Wednesday

CHAMPAIGN — The Indi Go Artist Co-Op will open on Wednesday the exhibition "A Geologist's Life — Part III: The Photography of Dr. William W. Shilts."

The show will remain on view through Oct. 8, and the opening reception will be at 6 p.m. Friday.

Shilts, a native of Hudson, Ohio, and a graduate of DePauw, Miami (Ohio) and Syracuse universities, worked as a research geologist at the Geological Survey of Canada from his student days in the mid-1960s until arriving in Champaign in '95.

Shilts served as the chief of the Illinois State Geological Survey from 1995 to 2008 and now is the executive director of the University of Illinois Prairie Research Institute, which houses the five state scientific surveys.

During his career, he took thousands of photographs of geological subjects and of landscapes and people from his world, especially the Appalachian mountains of southern Quebec, the Canadian tundra and the glaciers of the high Canadian Arctic.

Although many of the photographs are taken from ground level, some are from low-altitude flights in helicopters, which Shilts used for field transportation.

Working with photographer Joel Dexter, Shilts is digitizing his photo collection; Dexter selected about 150 images from the collection for three Indi Go Artist Co-Op shows. This is the third in the series. The first two were in April.
