2013-14 'One Book' pick takes look at homeless teens
URBANA — The Illini Union Bookstore has selected its 2013-14 One Book, One Campus selection — "Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope" — and is bringing its authors to the University of Illinois.
The book is by Kevin Ryan and Pulitzer Prize nominee Tina Kelley; they will be the featured speakers at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Illini Union I-Rooms in the west wing of the building at 1401 W. Green St., U.
Selected by Chancellor Phyllis Wise from a list of books compiled by a panel of students, faculty and staff, "Almost Home" is about homelessness among the nation's youths. The book follows six teenagers from across the United States and Canada as they confront life alone in the streets, eventually finding their way to the Covenant House, the largest charity serving homeless and runaway youths in North America.
Ryan is the president and CEO of Covenant House.
One Book, One Campus is a shared-reading program that promotes and encourages engagement campuswide. The program is sponsored by the Illini Union.
