BACH opens 19th season

CHAMPAIGN — The Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana will open their 19th season with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at St. John the Divine Episcopal Chapel, 1011 S. Wright St.

Entitled "Viva Italia!", the concert celebrates instrumental music composed in Italy, the birthplace of the Baroque era, by such notable composers as Antonio Vivaldi, Tomaso Albinoni, Girolamo Frescobaldi and Pietro Baldassari.

Local oboists Angela Schmid and Evan Tammen will perform Albinoni's "Concerto for Two Oboes and Strings." Lute player Jeffrey Noonan will be the soloist in Vivaldi's "Lute Concerto in D major."

Joining Noonan in Vivaldi's "Concerto for Lute and Viola d'amore" is newcomer William Bauer of St. Louis.

Trumpeter Jeremy McBain, a member of the music faculty at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, will perform "Sonata in F major for Strings and Trumpet" by Baldassari.

Harpsichordist Christopher Holman will complete the program by playing two works for harpsichord by Frescobaldi, the most important Italian keyboard composer and performer of the 17th century.

Tickets for the BACH concert are available at or at the door.
