Broadway actress to sing at Illini Union

URBANA — Broadway actress Shoshana Bean will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Illini Union at the University of Illinois.

Bean originated the role of Shelley in the original production of "Hairspray" and drew rave reviews as Elphaba in "Wicked."

With the release earlier this year of "O'Farrell Street," her second studio album, Bean hit No. 3 on the iTunes R&B charts. The music on the disc is inspired by legendary artists such as Otis Redding and Sam Cooke.

At the Union, Bean will perform hits largely from the album, as well as jazz standards and Broadway hits.

"The Illini Union Board thought that bringing Shoshana Bean here to perform would give all of the different local musical communities, including the high schools and traveling companies, a great opportunity to see the versatility this career can have," Illini Union Board program coordinator Tearria Beck-Scott said. "Shoshana has had success on stage, television and her own original music. It's inspiring."

Bean will perform in the Illini Union I-Rooms in the west wing of the building, 1401 W. Green St., U. The show is free to students and the public.
