Musicians will talk about history of genre in C-U

URBANA — The Community Center for the Arts will present the first event in the series "Jazz Talks!", featuring local jazz musicians Morgan Powell, Shab Wirtel and Gary Peyton, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at The Iron Post, 120 S. Race St.

The three musicians will discuss the roots of the jazz tradition in Champaign-Urbana. All arrived in C-U in the 1960s after graduating from the outstanding jazz program at North Texas State University.

They quickly joined what was already a thriving jazz scene, at venues such as Treno's, The Red Herring, Nature's Table and Mabel's. At Jazz Talks!, they will discuss the University of Illinois jazz bands and their legendary leader, the late John Garvey. The three also will perform a bit of jazz.

Tom Faux, a faculty member at Community Center for the Arts and Illinois State University, will emcee. There will be a $10 cover, with all proceeds going to the Community Center for the Arts.

The session is the first of a series of " Jazz Talks!" designed to document the early history of in one of C-U's strong musical traditions.
