Gamelan concert at UI on Saturday

URBANA — A Balinese gamelan concert will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Auditorium of the University of Illinois Music Building, 1114 Nevada St.

The end-of-semester concert will feature musicians of the UI gamelan class and the Urbana-Champaign Community Gamelan, both directed by I Ketut Gede Asnawa, a native of Indonesia. A gamelan is a traditional instrumental ensemble of Indonesia that typically includes many bronze percussion instruments.

The concert will feature traditional works along with Balinese dance directed by Putu Oka Mardiani Asnawa. The concert, presented by the UI's Robert E. Brown Center for World Music, is free and open to the public. For more information, visit cwm.illinois.edu.
