Look ahead: Top picks from Melissa Merli for the week to come

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday I'll be at The Iron Post, Urbana, to catch the top-notch trio SSG, featuring Chip Stephens on piano, Joel Spencer on drums and Larry Gray, bass. The UI jazz faculty members have played with the some of the biggest names in jazz. The cover is usually $5, a real bargain.

I'm always excited about the fall/spring exhibition openings at Krannert Art Museum on the UI campus. The next: 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The four new shows look great and include "Not Ready to Make Nice," featuring recent work by the Guerrilla Girls, who have been protesting the male-dominated art world for years.

Besides the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" I'd like to take in the LSIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival (one screening only) at 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Art Theater Co-op, Champaign. The festival qualifies films for the animated short Oscars category. It's not often you get to see shorts on a big screen. Tickets: $9.
