CHAMPAIGN — The touring exhibition "We Have Faith" will open Thursday in the Murphy Gallery of the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St. The opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 that evening.

"We Have Faith: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People of Faith Speak Out" is a photo-text exhibition created by Family Diversity Projects. It includes interviews by Peggy Gillespie of leading LGBT clergy, allies and people of faith and photographs by Gigi Kaeser — the same team that created the award-winning "Love Makes a Family" exhibition.

"For years we have been focused on spreading the word about equality for all families," said Gillespie, co-founder and co-director with Kaeser of Family Diversity Projects. "What we kept coming back to was a vast array of homophobia and transphobia, a lot of it coming from religious organizations."

So Gillespie, who identifies as queer, and Kaeser, who is straight, crafted an exhibition that would counter that. The works feature LGBT and allied clergy and religious leaders from a variety of faiths, among them Episcopal bishop Gene Robinson, Presbyterian minister Jane Spahr, Rabbi Steven Greenberg and Imam Daayiee Abdullah.

The Y is working to replace $60,000 revoked by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development because the Y refused to cut ties with an organization that supports marriage equality.

People who attend the opening reception will be able to meet Y staff and learn more about the Y's work. All Art @ the Y events are free and open to the public.
