Theater company plans 'Winter's Tale' auditions

URBANA — The What You Will Shakespeare theater company will have auditions for "The Winter's Tale" from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday in Room 150 of the University of Illinois English Building, 608 S. Wright St., U.

Monologues to read will be available for those auditioning. The director seeks seven males and five females and two others to fill gender-neutral roles.

"The Winter's Tale" is considered one of Shakespeare's "problem plays," as the first half is filled with drama and tragedy, while the second half makes a sharp turn toward silliness and a happy ending.

The What You Will production reconciles the two halves by portraying the story in the second act as one of forgiveness — and just a story — a fantasy in the mind of a guilty man who can't accept the consequences of what he's done.

Performances will be March 14-15. For more information, email
