Talk-comedy show to debut at Illini Union

URBANA — Illini Show Case, a talk and comedy show, will make its debut at 5 p.m. Friday in the Illini Union Courtyard Cafe.

The weekly late-night style show hosted by Esteban Gast, a stand-up comic and graduate student in political science, will feature University of Illinois and community people, plus live music.

Among the guests Friday:

— Champaign Mayor Don Gerard;

— Saagar Gupta, a UI accounting and computer science student and creator of UI memes;

— Scotty Rusch, a UI senior and singer-songwriter from Woodstock whose video on YouTube has received nearly 40,000 hits; and

— Opera singer John Williams Gomez, a tenor, artistic director of La Casa Lirica Opera Venezuela and a UI graduate student.

Gast, who has won a few stand-up competitions and now tours, also will perform sketch comedy.

Illini Show Case will take place every Friday; Gast estimates each show will last about 45 minutes. Admission is free. The UI-7 cable TV network will tape the show live each week.
