Three-day dance event kicks off Thursday

URBANA — Dance at Illinois will present on Thursday, Friday and Saturday its February Dance Concert, "Hybridity."

The program explores the ways contemporary dance has always engaged hybridity, a term initiated by scientists and reconsidered by cultural scholars.

The evening will kick off with a pre-performance duet — performed by former and current graduate students, choreographed by dance Professor Renee Wadleigh — in the lobby of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

Inside the Colwell Playhouse Theatre, pieces by resident faculty members Linda Lehovec, Jennifer Monson and John Toenjes will be presented, along with works by visiting lecturer Elijah Gibson and guest choreographer Jennifer Archibald.

February Dance will start at 7:30 each evening. The pre-performance dessert and conversation with the choreographers will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Krannert Room. Tickets for that are $7 each and include a drink and dessert.

A post-performance conversation will take place that evening, immediately after the performance, in the Colwell Playhouse.

Tickets for the dance concert itself are $18 for adults, $17 for senior citizens, $15 for non-UI students and $10 for UI students and youths of high school age and younger. For information, call 333-6280.
