Ceramic exhibit coming to Parkland gallery
CHAMPAIGN — A solo exhibition of figurative ceramic works by a Southeast Missouri State University professor opens Monday at the Parkland Art Gallery.
"Outlandish Adventures: Works by Benjie Heu" will remain on display through April 1, with the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Heu will give a gallery talk at 7 that night, and the Parkland Guitar Ensemble will perform.
Heu also will give an artist lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday in the S building.
The gallery gave this description of the work:
"Heu's body of work, expressing a personal narrative of the most outlandish adventures, has been developed with an eye fixed on the bare essentials.
"Two themes that inspire his work are battles against time and battles against obstacles that keep one from fulfilling desire or repossessing lost but cherished things. His response to this inspiration is to reveal truth and humor in the face of horror and the seemingly absurd."
Heu has a master's of fine arts degree from Ohio University and a bachelor's of fine arts degree from the University of Montevallo in Alabama. He maintains an active exhibition record of solo, group, juried, and invitational exhibitions.
Parkland Art Gallery's spring hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday; and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. The gallery will be closed March 28-29 for Parkland's spring holiday. For information, call 351-2505.
