Top picks from Melissa Merli for the weeks to come:
I often receive compliments on a felted-wool hat I bought from Karen Pritchett Upcycled Wearables at the 2013 Hatch Art Fair (left). She and 25 other vendors will be at the 2104 fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 15 at the Savoy Recreation Center. Bonus: Cracked food truck will be outside. I love this fair. Check it out at abouthatch.org/144-2/.

New to 2014 Hatch Festival: A free Trashion Show from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Square Village in Urbana. Residents and students will show outfits they made from recycled materials. Also new: The "(Re)Making Music" lecture-demo from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Indi Go. See Tony Taylor play the cool ukulele he made for me from a Detroit Athletic Club cigar-box!
Meredith Monk, now 71, and her vocal ensemble perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Krannert Center's Colwell Playhouse, in the music-theater piece "On Behalf of Nature." She's a pioneering, MacArthur genius type but her music was used in the Coen Brothers' 1998 cult film "The Big Lebowski." Bummer: Only a few seats remain, along the sides.
