Flute player to be featured at free recital Sunday

URBANA — The Urbana Pops Orchestra's principal flute player, Ai Yamaguchi, will be the featured performer at the ensemble's third of five free recitals at 2 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium on the lower level of the Urbana Free Library, 210 W. Green St.

A native of Tokyo, Yamaguchi is a doctoral candidate in flute performance and literature at the University of Illinois. She has a master's of music degree in flute performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and a bachelor's degree in music education from Wright State University.

In addition to playing with the Pop Orchestra, Yamaguchi performs regularly with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. She has also played in the Gulf Coast and the Miami Valley symphony orchestras.

Joining Yamaguchi on flute will be student musician Matt Reeder, a University Laboratory High School freshman who has played flute for about three years. He is principal flute with the East Central Illinois Youth Orchestra and placed second in Eastern Illinois University's High School Flute Competition in 2014.

Reeder is a founding member of the St. Patrick's Youth Orchestra, was a vocal soloist with Urbana Pops during its first year and played flute with Pops musicians last summer in the pit orchestra for the Urbana Park District's Youth Summer Musical production of "The Music Man."
