High school students performing musicals

Two local high schools are presenting musical productions this week:

— The High School of St. Thomas More in Champaign will present the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the school, 3901 N. Mattis Ave., C.

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for each show, which begins at 7. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens, students and school staff. Children under 5 are free.

— The Urbana High School Theatre presents "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" Wednesday through Sunday at the school's Cobb Auditorium, 1002 S. Race St.

The musical is adapted from the Academy Award-winning animated film by its original screenwriter, Linda Woolverton. The score with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice includes the Academy Award-winning song "Be Our Guest," plus additional songs written especially for the stage.

The cast and crew features nearly 80 students as well as one student from Leal Elementary School. Tim Broeker, director of theater at the high school, produced and directed the show. Cullyn Murphy is in charge of vocals; Chloe Ward and Adrian Rochelle, choreography; and Alek Mann, orchestra.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
