Visit to Danville Art League

Last weekend, I took my mother to the Danville Art League for the opening of the Town & Country amateur show and the Sharon Schmitz Regional Open; both remain on view through March 28 at the league building, 320 N. Franklin St. I took classes years ago at the much smaller league building on Sherman Street. Their facility is impressive!

Great mix of music

One of the coolest groups in C-U, Cownterculture, "combines the rural sensibilities of downstate Illinois with the jazz sensibilities of college-town counterculture and a hint of Chicago jazz," as founder Joan Hickey puts it. I dug its live music this past week at The Iron Post; read about Hickey in Studio Visit on today's G-1.

Different kind of gong show

On Thursday evening at Krannert Art Museum, I spent an hour istening to the Nakatani Gong Orchestra, led by Tatsuya Nakatani. The 10 players used bows and mallets to play the shimmering, golden, giant gongs; they provided a dreamy soundtrack while I browsed the museum's interesting "Art as Provocation" show — it includes recent acquisitions.
