Highlights from Melissa Merli on the week that was
Jazz trance from the Post
UI music alum Brad Wheeler spent most of his career in Chicago and Paris, circling back to C-U's jazz scene a few years ago. Playing soprano sax last week with other great local players at The Iron Post, Wheeler and his music put me in a much welcome trance that helped me transcend my day-to-day concerns. Hot time! Hot music!
Spring dancing in
Appearing last weekend at Krannert Center, the Mark Morris Dance Group performed several newer dances that seemed to hearken back to Morris' early days as a folk dancer. With lots of partnering and group moves, the pieces were a joy to watch. And coupled with colorful costumes, they were the best harbinger of spring I've seen so far.
Around the world with Kronos
The Kronos Quartet concert Wednesday at Krannert Center was a season highlight. The foursome took us around the world, performing pieces from Colombia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Sweden and by cantor Alter Yechiel Karniol and Americans Geeshie Wiley and Philip Glass. The icing: a great arrangement of Wagner's overture to "Tristan und Isolde."
