Symphony presents youth concerts

URBANA — The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday and Wednesday will present "It's All About Style," the CUSO Youth Concerts for this year.

About 3,500 grade-school students from throughout Champaign County will attend the performances, conducted by Maestro Stephen Alltop, at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Students register with their schools for the concerts through the University of Illinois School of Music Office of Outreach and Public Engagement.

The program will focus on musical styles throughout the centuries and feature Matthew Naughtin's Birthday Variations and excerpts from Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92.

Alltop described Naughtin's Birthday Variations as a clever piece that uses the familiar "Happy Birthday" tune in lots of different "costumes."

"Students can also participate in a musical matching game by identifying each style they hear played by the orchestra," he said.

The excerpts from Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 will demonstrate musical styles the students will learn about.

The participating teachers receive a comprehensive educator's guide and recordings of the works performed during the concert to help enhance their students' experience, preparation, and music education.
