Duo to perform Thursday night

CHAMPAIGN — The Sudden Sound Concert Series will present the Chicago Underground Duo at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Krannert Art Museum, 500 E. Peabody Drive, C.

As the core of Chicago Underground projects for 17 years, cornetist Rob Mazurek and percussionist Chad Taylor are touring to support their seventh release. Their signature sound of cornet, drums and vibraphone often includes electronics, drum machines and the African mbira, often called a thumb piano.

When not together as a duet, Chicago-based Mazurek focuses on his trio Starlicker, the Sao Paulo Underground and the Exploding Star Orchestra. The New York City-based Taylor tours with projects led by Marc Ribot, Ken Vandermark, and Cooper-Moore.

The Sudden Sound concert is free and open to the public and curated by Urbana musician Jason Finkelman.
