Step on out to the Allerton Barn Dance

With the death of actor Mickey Rooney, the age of barn dance movies is officially over.

But the barn dance lives on.

The University of Illinois Employees Credit Union hosts the Allerton Barn Dance on Friday evening.

It features the BowDacious String Band from 6 to 7 p.m.; Sam Payne and Friends from 7 to 8 p.m.; and The Curses starting at 8 p.m.

The Bow-Dacious String Band consists of about 50 kids, aged 6 through high school, who get together weekly to play popular music styles on violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo and other stringed instruments.

Their repertoire is drawn from traditional and popular music genres from around the world.

There's a suggested donation of $5 a person or $10 for a family at the door

The Allerton Music Barn is at 515 Old Timber Road, Monticello.

Dancers who get there early will be served food and drink from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
