Allerton documentary premieres this week

MONTICELLO — Ebertfest won't be the only place to see movies this week.

The Allerton Park and Retreat Center will premiere, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, the documentary "Land of Plenty: Robert Allerton and His Gift to Illinois."

The short doc explores the history of Allerton Park and Retreat Center, from the rise of Samuel Allerton, the founder of the family's wealth, to the unprecedented gift of the Allerton estate near Monticello to the University of Illinois from his son, Robert, a philanthropist and art collector.

The story is told through interviews, historic photos, film strips and images of the park today. The screening will be followed by a presentation by the documentary's writer-director Tory Dahlhoff. A cash bar and popcorn will be available.

The screening will be at the Retreat Center Library, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. Reserved seating is $25 and must be purchased in advance by calling 333-3287. The ticket fees help pay for additional public programs at Allerton.
