If a lot of contemporary art leaves you cold check out "Distant Hollerings," the powerful narrative paintings and sculptures by Preston Jackson at Cinema Gallery, 102 W. Main St., U. But hurry: the show ends Saturday. It's open 10-5 Wednesday thru Saturday; or call 367-3711.

The biggest event of the year is, of course, Roger Ebert's Film Festival from Wednesday thru Sunday at the Virginia Theatre. At least seven of the 12 movies are sold out. But hang around — you can usually find a festival pass or ticket no one's using. Or wait in line for one.

I visited the Parkland Theatre on Monday to chat with "Spamalot" director Dallas Street and three cast members. Based on Sean Murphy's lighting design alone, the musical promises to be a winner. The cast is strong too, and Street has a great rep. Through May 3; 351-2528.
