South African Freedom Day scheduled for Wednesday

URBANA — The Center for African Studies, along with Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, will host South African Freedom Day at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Krannert.

Taking place in the Tryon Festival Theater, the free event will focus on the role played by music, dance and other forms of cultural expression during the anti-apartheid struggle.

Performers Amira Davis and the JalimusoSISWA troupe; Vukoni Lupa-Lasaga, an instrumentalist from Uganda; and jazz musicians Rick Deja and friends will perform South African songs and dances, as well as music from other parts of the continent in solidarity with people involved in the anti-apartheid struggle.
