Duo planning show at Sylvia's Irish Inn
URBANA — The duo Gasta from West Michigan will perform for the first time in Urbana, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Sylvia's Irish Inn, 312 W. Green St. The cover is $10.
Gasta's members are Nathan Wright on violin, guitar and vocals, and Jonathan Misner on bodhran and percussion instruments, whistles and vocals. The two perform Celtic music with a contemporary flair.
Their origins are in bluegrass and hymns, but Gasta branched out to mix into their music reels and slides, with elements of jazz and world music.
Wright is classically trained but also studied with bluegrass fiddlers. He cites influences from Mark O'Conner, to Jeremy Kittel, to jazz master Jean Luc Ponty.
Misner is a self-taught musician who immersed himself in Celtic music. He and Wright began playing music together in 2003 and formed as a band in 2009.
The duo has recorded two albums, "Vision" and "Here's to You." In December 2012 Gasta released their first EP, "In High Gear."
The band performs throughout Michigan, including at Irish festivals, and is now on tour.
