Summerville class to perform concert

CHAMPAIGN — Students and community singers in Willie Summerville's music class, "Harmonizing Select Differences," will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at Salem Baptist Church, 500 E. Park St., C.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The class choir is a diverse group of local middle and high school and University of Illinois students and educators, retirees, homemakers and local business owners. Several of them will perform short piano solos they learned this semester; in addition, one singer will perform an aria from Handel's "Messiah."

The choir will perform music from the baroque period as well as spiritual, traditional and contemporary gospel music. Noah Brown will help Summerville conduct. Other musicians involved are Marquis McKnight, percussion; Nate Banks, trumpet; and Ray Wiggs, Leroy Holiday and Allen James Jr., keyboards.

During the free concert the performers will observe a moment in memory of the late Clarence Todd Taylor, who died this past fall. He was an accompanist for the Urbana High School choir and a gospel musician.
