Sorry, Roger

Roger Ebert thought the 1987 movie "84 Charing Cross Road" (left) starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins was too slow-paced. But I found the story of pen pals on both sides of the Atlantic from 1949 through the late '60s charming, if a bit quaint. It would appeal to anyone who loves British lit, London and New York.

The next best thing

I would have gone to The Iron Post three evenings in a row last weekend to hear music if I hadn't hurt my hand gardening and taken a couple of Aleve. So I stayed home Sunday evening to watch on TV "60 Minutes," "Call the Midwife" and "Mr. Selfridge." An entertaining lineup, for sure.

'Reliable Bestiary'

On Tuesday night in Melissa Mitchell's "shrine assemblage" workshop, I finished my cigar-box shrine to the busy beaver. Inspired by Deke Weaver's "Unreliable Bestiary" series, I plan "Reliable Bestiary," a series of cigar-box shrines paying homage to the wild animals who live among us and are not endangered.
